Master class Cooper crowned May Pen domino champion

Leroy Cooper had no equals as he soared to the top of his game to be crowned May Pen champion of that town’s stop in the electrifying Supreme Domino Master Series at the Hotel Versalles in May Pen, Clarendon, on Sunday.

Over 150 skilled domino players gathered to compete, but Cooper was too hot as he outclassed the field to run away with the grand prize of $150,000, plus bragging rights as May Pen’s champion.

After four intense rounds of play, Cooper led all and was followed by Oneil McKenzie, second place, Adene Higgins third, and Archilous Lennon taking fourth place.

An elated Cooper said: “Mi feel good. From me reach the second round, I felt like I would win the championship today. The competition was fierce, but I stayed focused and played my best game. I am very happy to be crowned as the Supreme Domino Master of May Pen.”

The Supreme Domino Master Series has been creating waves throughout Jamaica, with its community qualifiers drawing in a competitive crowd of over 200 participants at each stop, all vying for the coveted title of Supreme Domino Master.

David White was crowned Portmore’s champion, Garfield Brissett earned bragging rights after the Spanish Town stop and Gerry Gardner was the last man standing after the first stop in Montego Bay.

Dwayne Tulloch, senior vice-president of retail and customer operations at Supreme Ventures Limited, expressed delight at the continued success of the series.

“The competition has been nothing short of amazing, and we are excited to witness the growth and impact of the Supreme Domino Master Series on Jamaica’s domino culture. The series has been growing with each stop as we see more people turning out and some have become familiar faces as they follow the series to each community.

“We, especially, love the enthusiasm and passion of the spectators and players and we congratulate Leroy Cooper on his victory and are looking forward to the next tournament, which will be held at Caymanas Park on May 21,” Tulloch stated.

The Supreme Domino Master Series encourages those interested in participating in the tournament to purchase their tickets from any of the 16 ticket outlets islandwide, including Fontana Pharmacy branches, select Texaco service stations, Supreme Ventures retail centres, Pier One, and online at caribtix.com. Tickets for the community qualifiers are available for $1,000 per person, while tickets for the finals will be available for $5,000 per person.

The top 16 competitors from each community will automatically qualify to compete in the national championship on June 4. The winner of the grand finals will receive $1 million and the title of Jamaica’s National Domino Champion.

Supreme Ventures using domino series to boost blood bank donations

In an effort to boost the nation’s blood collection efforts, Supreme Ventures Limited (SVL) has teamed up with the National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS) to stage a series of blood drives as part of the Supreme Master Domino Series. Three drives remain in the series which encourages domino enthusiasts to exercise their charitable hands and donate to the mobile unit.

According to Heather Goldson, director of the Supreme Ventures Foundation and SVL’s chief marketing officer, “The Supreme Ventures Foundation has had a long-standing partnership with the Blood Bank and we are aware of the ongoing challenges they face to tackle deficits in supply. We saw it as a great opportunity to capitalise on the expected turnout for the series by establishing blood donation centres at each venue. With this approach, we are aiming to heighten awareness around the importance of giving blood while simultaneously receiving a generous supply of donations throughout the duration of the tournament. As we go across the island for the domino tournament, we know we will be able to reach people who may want to donate but may not otherwise be knowledgeable about what the process entails.”

The company hopes Jamaicans will realise the health benefits associated with donating blood, and how it provides insurance for donors and family members in the event of medical emergencies.

“The NBTS relies on voluntary donors to fill the void that currently exists in the overburdened health system. We have seen where insufficient units have led to detrimental effects, and this has encouraged us even more, to help spread awareness as best as we can.” continues Goldson.

Blood donor organiser, Igol Allen, expressed his appreciation for Supreme Ventures taking on this initiative.

“We at the NBTS applaud Supreme Ventures for including blood donation as part of this tournament. This will allow us to reach a greater audience and segment of the population we normally would not be able to reach. These partnerships are always welcomed, as they allow us to better carry out our mandate, particularly those in central and western Jamaica. We want Jamaicans to know that each pint of blood can save lives and that, by donating, our hospitals will be able to operate much smoother. So this tournament will also serve as a sensitisation medium through which we can educate members of the communities,” said Allen.

The final three drives in the series will take place on May 7 at Hotel Versalles in Clarendon, May 21 at Caymanas Park, and at the grand finals at the National Arena on June 11.

People who wish to donate otherwise may do so at the National Blood Transfusion Service, from Mondays to Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Fridays.

Portmore-leg domino champion savours success

Ruddy Allen – Jamaica Observer – April 28, 2023

DAVID White, the Portmore-leg champion of Supreme Ventures Limited’s Domino Masters competition, says his success was due to his ability to effectively analyse the game.

The competition, contested in a “cut-throat” format, was held on Sunday, April 23 at Caymanas Park.

The final featured White, Milton Meredith, Romane Savage, and fan favourite Keron Baxter.

Playing to the first six points, Baxter raced to the opening two points of the game before White and the aggressive Savage got into the mix at two points each as well. Baxter roused the audience once more as he raced to four points, but that was all he could offer as White, Savage, and Meredith all passed him on their way to five points each.

White drew his seven cards in what was an explosive final game of the night, and with double required to pose every game, to his delight he pulled in five sixes in his hand, meaning he controlled six of the game’s seven sixes. White had no trouble getting to six points with the game flowing effortlessly to him.

White was awarded prize money of $150,000 as the winner’s share while Meredith went home with $100,000 for placing second, Savage got $75,000 for third place, and Baxter received $50,000 for finishing fourth.

“It’s a nice feeling. To be really honest, it is nice to win $150,000 but it is far better to make people remember, since they already know, how good of a player you are — and that’s what feels good,” White told the Jamaica Observer.

“The reality is that the game might have gone anywhere. In a cut-throat game one of the things you must do at all times is monitor the game. You can’t make the man at four go five if you’re at zero and another man is at one, so you have to be extremely alert, very aware, and monitor the game. That’s what I was able to do and that’s how I got through,” White added.

Noting the almost 200 participants, Gary Peart, executive chairman of Supreme Ventures Limited, said the Portmore leg of the competition was by far the most successful.

“We had the most entries that we ever had. The vibes was great and the environment was wonderful. The competition was excellent; it was the first time that the semi-finals had three women, plus we had somebody that was handicapped and so we had a widespread of people.

“Unfortunately none of the women got to the final but I was very pleasantly surprised by the amount of women that came out,” Peart told the Observer.

The tournament started at Pier 1 in Montego Bay on Sunday, March 12, 2023 and Jerry Gardener secured his spot in history as the tournament’s first community winner, second place went to Allan Harris, while Licidius Nelson and Gavin Simpson secured third and fourth places, respectively.

Garfield Brissett won the Spanish Town leg at Maggie’s Sports Bar in Greendale on March 19, 2023. Jeneard Williamson finished in second place, while Natalie Wright got third and Collin Powell placing fourth.

The tournament’s next stop is slated for Hotel Versalles in May Pen on May 7.

Players interested in participating in the tournament can purchase tickets at any of the 16 ticket outlets located throughout the island, including all Fontana Pharmacy branches, select Texaco service stations, Supreme Ventures retail centres, Pier 1, and caribtix.com.

The cost of tickets for the community qualifiers is $1,000 per person, and for the national level it is $5,000. The top 16 individuals from each community will qualify directly for the national championship.
